Personal Philosophy:
Success, in sports and in life, rarely comes to fruition without work.  Vince Lombardi once said “The dictionary is the only place that success comes before work.”

My goals are for the players to (in this order) learn the fundamentals, to have fun learning and playing, to learn to work as a team, and to be as competitive a team as they can be.  The players will grow as athletes and as individuals as we work toward these goals.

I'm back for another year and I couldn't be more excited for the season to start! Volleyball has been a huge part of my life since I was in 6th grade and my passion for the game continues to grow, as well as coaching the girls who have the passion and enthusiasm to learn and play - it's contagious. I think it is extremely important for girls to have fun on the court and play as a TEAM; no one person can win the game by them self so as long as the girls play together, talk and have fun - then the game is totally worth it!

Coaching Experience:
BVRC: 3 years
Southwind: 1 year
Volleytime Camp: Spring '09

Besides coaching and playing volleyball, I love to travel (especially anywhere warm), run, see my family and play with my dog, Reese.

Dona StephensonDona Stephenson

I started playing volleyball in 5th grade and continued in high school where I played three years of varsity. I was caption my junior and senior year and MVP my senior year. I played USAV for 2 years in high school and 2 years after high school. I played 1 year in college and then ran off and got married.

I have been coaching my daughter's recreation team for the last 4 years. I love coaching and have learned so much over the past 4 years and am ready to learn even more. I realize the responsibility of a coach is so much more than just teaching the skills. It is also teaching the heart and building the character to persevere and grow.

I grew up in Jefferson City, Missouri where I met my husband. We have moved around a lot in our 15 years of marriage but have been living in Lenexa for the past 5 years and love it. We have 2 kids, a stepdaughter and a grand baby. I am a full time mom and also work part time as a research analyst for a commercial appraiser. My husband and I lead the middle school ministry in our church and help out with the teen ministry as well.

Philosophy
“Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.” – Arthur Ashe

What I emphasize strongly to all of my players is, “Practice like you Play.” This is something that has been my philosophy both as a player and coach. I believe a strong work ethic is the most important quality to have not only as a player but as an individual as well. As a coach, I push my players to give their best and work hard 100% of the time. I was very vocal on the court as a player and have carried that over as a coach. I always give my players lots of encouragement and feedback about their skills. My goal as a coach is to give my players a better understanding of the game of volleyball in helping them develop their skills fundamentally.

I am currently attending JCCC and will be transferring to KU next fall.

About Me:
Growing up in Topeka, Kansas, sports were really my first love.  I played club volleyball for the Topeka Juniors, as well as playing both volleyball and softball in high school.  In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Jake, and our golden retriever puppy, Jazz.  I currently am a full-time student at the University of Kansas, pursuing my undergraduate degree in Political Science.  I will be continuing my education next fall, as I plan on going to law school.  I am looking forward to my first season with the Southwind Tribe!

Coaching Philosophy:
My coaching philosophy is one that consists mainly of hard work and enthusiasm.  I believe that if you work hard and have fun, winning will be a natural byproduct.  I also believe that teamwork and communication are two of the most important aspects of the sport.  If a team works together and gels on the court, they are inadvertently learning an integral life skill.  Teamwork is not just a skill that is necessary for volleyball, it is one that a player will use for the rest of their lives.

Coaching Experience:

Middle School Volleyball Program, The Barstow School
2008-2009

Jake IsaacsJake Isaacs

About Me:
Growing up, my parents instilled a strong work ethic and desire for competition in both my brother and I.  They required us to be involved in one sport every season and through those requirements a love for athletics and sports developed.  While attending high school in Chicago, I lettered in five varsity sports: football, wrestling, baseball, swimming, and track.  After my college baseball career was cut short due to a knee injury, I left school to pursue success as a small business owner.  In the five year sabbatical away from college I married my best friend and moved to Kansas City.  I am currently back in school and will be completing my bachelor’s degree in management this May.  On top of coaching and school, I work full-time for a seminar company in the Kansas City area and also own a home remodeling and handy man business on the side.  In the little free time that I do have, I love spending time with my wife, playing with my golden retriever and watching movies.  I strongly believe in teaching the fundamentals, stressing the importance of having a great attitude, and playing with passion for the game to lay a foundation of success in life off the court.  I am excited to be a part of the Southwind Tribe this season!

Personal Philosophy:
Four time Kentucky Derby winner Willie Shoemaker once was quoted as saying that “desire is the most important factor in the success of any athlete.”  My number one goal as a coach is to cultivate that desire for success on and off the court in every athlete.  As a junior and senior in high school I was the captain of my high school swimming team.  I helped to lead the team to consecutive conference championships for the first time in school history.  The mantra of every member on that team from the seniors all the way down to the freshmen was YOUGOTTAWANNA: you gotta wanna.  You gotta wanna win, you gotta wanna work hard, you gotta wanna sacrifice, you gotta wanna succeed, and most importantly you gotta wanna have fun.  The lessons learned in the context of organized athletics translate into successful skill sets that will carry our athletes though the rest of their lives.  As Author Ashe once said “success is a journey, not a destination.”

"There are only two options regarding commitment, you’re either in or you’re out. There's no such thing as life in between." - Anonymous

This is my 3rd year coaching with Southwind.  I have learned an immense amount from the directors and coaches within this organization.  I didn’t think it was possible, but the more I learn about volleyball, my love for the game grows.  I could not be more excited to get this club season started – Welcome!!

My goal as the U-14 Regional Gold Coach is to develop a fundamentally strong team.  At this age, being confident in your ability play, contributes greatly to the outcome of the game.  Strategy, control, and passion are all vital attributes.  I encourage open communication between the players and the coaching staff.  Every player will be aware of her strengths and opportunities.  As a team, we will drill on passing and serve receive, spot serving, defense and offense.  Throughout the season we will focus on each player’s opportunities and provide specialized training in-line with her role(s) on the court.  Defense is so important in this game – we WILL be a defensive powerhouse.  Practices will be educational, competitive, exhausting and fun.  I want this team to be passionate about volleyball, just as I am.  There are few things that I love more.  I will give this team all of the tools to fuel that fire.

I grew up in Dodge City, Kansas.  I began playing volleyball when I was 13.  I immediately fell in love with the sport.  In high school I was a 3-year Varsity letter winner.  I was awarded Honorable Mention in 1999 and WAC All Team Player in 2000.  After high school I attended Kansas State University earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing.  During college and today, I continue to play volleyball on women’s competitive, co-ed and sand leagues.  I currently live in Prairie Village, Kansas with my dog, Joey.  I work for the Kellogg Company and coach volleyball at Notre Dame de Sion High School.

Courtney CookCourtney Cook

I am a native Texan who is relatively new to Kansas.  I grew up in Southlake, Texas and graduated from Southlake Carroll High School in 2003.  After graduation I crossed the Red River to attend Oklahoma State University for an amazing four years… Go Pokes!  As a college graduate, I continued my journey north, and I am currently working in Pharmaceutical Sales based in Overland Park.

As a coach’s daughter, I practically grew up in a gym.  You normally would have found me with a basketball in my hands, but it was not until I was in seventh grade that I started playing volleyball. And that’s when I realized that I LOVE this sport.  I continued to play through high school and was captain of the Varsity team my senior year.  I loved my teammates and coaches just as much as I loved the actual game.  While in college at Oklahoma State, I played Intramurals and won a couple of Championships on both co-ed and women’s teams.

I have coached at many volleyball camps and clinics including my high school summer camps and a sports camp in Branson, Missouri (Kanakuk Kamps).  I am extremely excited to be coaching for Southwind this year and getting back into competitive volleyball.  I look forward to working with some fantastic coaches, building better volleyball players, and growing with my team.  But most of all, I look forward to having a lot of fun!

Volleyball/Coaching Information
15 years ago I played my very first volleyball game in a sand volleyball league. Years later it is still a passion of mine – I enjoy playing indoor, outdoor, co-ed and women’s. This will be my 5th year coaching for Southwind and my second year coaching at the U14 age group. I have coached at the U12 level (gold and silver) for two years and U13 (silver) level of one year and U14 (gold) for one year.

I am ready for the start of this year’s club season! I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm of volleyball with my team. My goal as a coach is to develop confident, perseverant, enthusiastic players - all personal qualities that are good in life as well as for a volleyball player. I believe that teamwork and communication on the court are key to a successful volleyball team. We will work on refining fundamental skills at every practice, and on offense and defense aspects of the game.

Personal Information
I have been married for 9 years, and have a 3-1/2 year old daughter named Chloe and a 4 month old named Fynn. We also have two black labs - Cletus & Matty. In addition to volleyball, I love to run, play tennis, cook and work on art projects with Chloe. My day time job is as a Senior Creative Manager in the Marketing department at Westlake Ace Hardware.

Rebecca ArnoldRebecca Arnold

I began playing volleyball in Junior High.  I played 4 years in high school in Oregon where I also competed in swimming, basketball and tennis.  I then played at Portland State University from 1978-1981 before transferring to Arizona State University from 1981-1983.  In 1983, I was selected to compete with the US Athletes in Action volleyball team in Japan, China and Hong Kong.  Since then, I have enjoyed playing with many different teams on sand, grass and indoor.

I have been a coach in many summer camps during my college years and began coaching again in 2001 in JCPRD leagues.

I am married and have 4 children and also enjoy running and skiing.  I am a stay at home mom and a wellness consultant with Juice Plus+.

I am convinced that dedication, persistence, and working together as a team will take us a long way.   We will focus on improving our skills, learning to anticipate and react to the ball and most importantly having fun.  I have learned that it is not always those with the most talent that go the farthest but instead those with the most heart, discipline and perseverance.

Playing Experience:
Volleyball has been a major part of my life for going on 10 years now. I’ve started at the lowest recreational level and worked to playing competitively with hard work and a ton of practice. I enjoy both indoor and outdoor volleyball, but I would have to say that doubles outdoor grass is my favorite way to play. I can’t imagine a week going by without playing and I look forward to many more years. One of my favorite memories of the game is playing a doubles tournament in Aspen, CO…for starters I had never seen the mountains before so that was amazing in itself but me and my partner played our hearts out and we got 5th out of 80 teams that weekend, what a great feeling and what a fun memory. This game has given me great memories and great friends…here’s to many more to come.

About me:
I’ve worked for Sprint for 8 years as a network analyst and many other things. I’m married to a beautiful woman named Cherryh and we have a little dog name Jasper, he’s worse than a kid. I’m Kansas City born and grew up in Lee’s Summit from kindergarten to high school. I love this town and I can’t imagine being anywhere else. Other than volleyball I always watch my KC Chiefs and Royals and try to make as many games as I can. I love to play cards…especially poker and also play flag football and softball. My personal quote is "Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly." Robert F. Kennedy

This is my first year coaching for Southwind and I am very excited. When I was younger I played basketball, volleyball, softball and soccer. I went to Blue Valley High school and lettered 4 years varsity basketball and 3 years varsity volleyball. After high school I continued my volleyball career at Allen County Community College for 2 years as a setter. After Allen County I went on to play 2 years at Emporia State University as an outside hitter /defensive specialist. I graduated from Emporia State in August with a degree in Health Promotion. Currently I am a part time fitness specialist at a fitness facility in downtown Kansas City Missouri.

I am very excited to get the opportunity to be a part of the Southwind volleyball family. I hope I can help develop a strong team of mature young ladies both on and off the court.

Sports can teach you many of life’s hardest lessons. As an athlete I learned that hard work and a positive attitude will take you anywhere. I hope to pass this lesson on to the girls that I help coach.

It's not the will to win that matters, everyone has that.
It's the will to prepare to win that matters.

Heather Mitchell
Assistant Coach/Coaching Consultant

I have loved volleyball since the fourth grade. I played all through grade school, middle school and high school, but sadly, not in college. After college, however, I almost immediately started playing and coaching again.

I've coached at the gold and silver club level for a total of 9 years including a bid to the national tournament in Denver in 1997 with a fabulous 15U team. I've played women's club ball mostly at the BB level with the occasional A outing (in my younger years). Volleyball is unique in strategic, tactical and coordination requirements making it an easy choice for my favorite sport of all.

Diana Miller
Assistant Coach/Coaching Consultant

In my sixteen years of playing and four years of coaching experience, I have found three characteristics common to successful teams: deliberate practice, hard work ethic, and strong mental focus/stamina.  I believe it is my job as a coach to work hard, and the players’ job is to reciprocate that effort.  Every time a player touches a volleyball, she should strive to improve.  Hitting fifty balls a day won’t necessarily improve your hitting skills. Hitting ten balls a day in a deliberate manner, practicing a particular mechanic of the skill set and striving to improve that mechanic with each contact in response to feedback from your coach is purposeful practice that, over time and with increased consistency, will improve your hitting skills.   Reinforcing and perfecting fundamental skills is vital to this goal of continued improvement.  My job is to create a practice environment where players are exposed to a variety of situations so that they learn how to adapt, adjust and make strategic decision in critical moments.

I strive to develop a personal relationship with each player and to highlight her contribution to the team.  If I can teach each girl to thrive in the team setting, while still appreciating her individual value, I believe I am teaching her an important life skill.  I firmly believe that a team of average players working together as a team should prevail over a team of highly skilled athletes playing as individuals.

I also emphasize the mental aspect of the game.  While athleticism and skill are key to becoming successful, a well rounded player has the mental focus and stamina to prevail in any situation.

While I have high expectations for my players, I also have high expectations for myself. I hope to learn as much as I can from the girls and other Southwind volleyball coaches.  I hope to convey my love for the game to my players in each and every practice and tournament.  Ultimately, I want to teach my players to embrace volleyball with the love and passion that I have for the game and to appreciate how rewarding the sport can be later in life, wherever life takes them (or hopefully, wherever they take life).
