Southwind Volleyball Club South League (Summer 2010)
Southwind offers players in the 5th thru 12th grades an opportunity to "keep their hands on the ball" outside of the club season by providing league teams during the summer months. Alhtough players train in a more relaxed atmosphere during the summer months South League is a much more competitive environment than the Summer Leagues through Johnson County Parks and Recreation. Southwind participates in the South league offered by MidAmerica Volleyball Club.
Players practice once or twice a week (1.5-2 hr/practice) and compete one night at week. The training begins in late May and runs for 8-9 weeks with 7 nights of competition (Only 6 nights of compeition for the Varsity level) with 4 sets each night of competition. Competition nights vary depending on level of the team; teams can register for Junior High, Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity.
Southwind will fill these teams with current club members and may allow players outside of the club to participate. Although there is open registration this will be a selective process and there is no guarantee of obtaining a position on a Southwind South League team.
Participants will be instructed and drilled over the basic skills of the game. Strategies of the game will be introduced with emphasis on fundamental skills. Each team is limited to 9-10 players so early registration is encouraged to ensure a position on a team. There will be two practices per week, prior to competition nights. Once competition begins there will be one practice a week. Players are expected to attend at least one practice a week, preferable with their team, but are allowed to make up practices with another squad of a similar age. At the first practice of each session there is short parent meeting to cover the parent/player handbook, any additional information, and answer questions.
Summer 2010: Compeition nights are as follows: Monday nights at HOA-Junior Varisty, Tuesday nights at TBD-Varsity, Wednesday nights at HOA-Middle School, and Thursday nights at HOA-Freshman. Competition begins the week of June 8th and runs through July 29th. Teams are guarantedd 4 sets per night and there are no matches the week of June 28th. All teams will have 7 weeks of competition with the exception of the Varsity level who will only have 6 weeks of competition. Deadline for participation is May 14th. UPDATE (4.13.10): Although practices will begin the week of May 17, 2010 we will be holding tryouts for the South League teams on Monday, May 10th and Tuesday, May11th. We will make every effort to place athletes on teams. However, if we do not have a team for athletes 5th - 8th grade we will move them to the Summer League with assesments the following week.
Southwind will be offering teams at all levels, Junior High, Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity. ($195/participant) Registration does not guarantee a position on a team and communication will take place once a player has registered.

With the number of activities during the summer it is difficult to plan practice times so teams will alternate an early practice and then a later practice. The coaching staff prefers players attend their "team" practice times however if they can not there will be other teams who alternate on a different schedule allowing players to attend a different practice. Once competition begins practices will alternate from one evening a week, Mondays thru Thursdays and Friday afternoons. Again, the coaching staff prefers players attend their "team" practice times however if they can not there will be other teams who alternate on a different schedule allowing players to attend a different practice. Please keep your coaches informed with your schedule so we may do a better job of preparing practices.
Practices are held at Land Gym (MidAmerica Nazarene University) with competition taking place at various locations in and around Olathe. See the calendar page for practice times and locations. Although most practices are held at Land gym we will be looking for other locations due to the Land gym not be available some days/evenings.
Each participant recieves a Southwind Volleyball T-shirt/team jersey.
